The Bells

History

The tower was built during the 15th century (1470) and is almost 100ft high. In 1582, the tenor bell was hung. This replaced and earlier bell and records can be traced to 1517 for work on this bell, which was probably hung before that time. In 1588 the tenor was thought to have been rung to celebrate the defeat of the Spanish Armada. Rainham had a ring of six bells from 1773 until 1913.

In 1913, the existing six bells were re-hung in a completely new steel frame after being thoroughly overhauled and renovated by John Taylor & Co, Loughborough. At the same time, two new bells (treble and second) were added and dedicated by Canon E A Stuart of Canterbury Cathedral at a special service on Sunday 20th July 1913.

In 1982, the bells were re-hung on completely new fittings (roller bearings) and all the clappers we re-bushed. Since then, only minor maintenance has been necessary on the bells.
